  • To obtain the Zimbabwean visas can be really very difficult. One offer of the Berlin embassy (we are from Prague, Czech Republic) was: "Come to Berlin, deliver your passports, stay here 14 days and we maybe will proceed the visas in Harare". They didn't suggest us what to do in Berlin without passports. In Vienna embassy (Austria) proposed more realistic variant: "Come at 9 a.m. and at 2 p.m. you will obtain the visas". Yippee! After a swift drive to Vienna we succeeded to purchase the visas (60 USD per one, double entry).

  • We were pleasurably surprised by the willingness of the natives to help us in any situation. All of them were very kind and helpful.

  • The Lusaka University consists from six faculties and it was possible to send email here without any problems.

  • We tried hitchhiking in the Republic of South Africa. We waited maximally several minutes and average velocity during 500 kilometers long passage was about 100 km per hour.

  • Local women have fantastic hairstyles. Various braids and chignons are very common even at the kids. It must be very time consuming and complicated to create these nice hairstyles.

  • On the Zimbabwean and South African border you will see ploughed soil and barbed wire. We Czechs remember this from the communist period of our country.

  • The custom's formalities can take as long as four hours. Oh my God, why?

  • The president of Zambia proclaimed the legal holiday during the eclipse. In press we had read that the president called the eclipse a God's miracle. Maybe the whole Zambia was present on the University playground and everybody was celebrating, dancing and drinking.

  • The delay of the flight from Prague to Johannesburg was 24 hours. In the opposite direction the delay was only 8 hours. Never more we will use Czech airlines. In the case of problems caused by themselves they are not able to give any help.

  • The cars in RSA were mostly Toyotas and Isuzus. And microbuses of unknown origin, of course. Our expedition was an exception as we hired VW Microbus 2.5 i. We travelled with it through Kruger Park and to the Blyde River Canyon.
